No internet shutdown on August 8 polling date IEBC

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday, July 27 met with local and international observers at Nairobi’s Bomas of Kenya to brief them on the election process and its preparedness to conduct the August 8 General Election.

To cool rumors going round that internet connection will be shut down during the polling day, IEBC has assured Kenyans that there will be no such thing and that they have received assurances from the Communication Authority of Kenya.

In a bid to promote transparency and accountability, the electoral commission now says that it will be publishing the voter register of each of the 40,883 polling stations countrywide seven days to the election day.

According to IEBC Commissioner, Yakub Guliye, the electoral agency is committed to conducting free, fair and credible polls that will reflect the will of the people, disclosing that every media house will have access to a feed from the Bomas of Kenya, the National Tallying Center, for all results announced and declared at constituency level.

“The results will also be available on a public portal. So you can download the documents from the comfort of your house or office and do your own tallying,” said Commissioner Guliye.

Nevertheless, IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati says that poll officers will be issuing each voter with 6 ballot papers for all the elective positions, to ensure that there will be reconciliation of total ballot papers issued and the overall voter turn-put in each polling station.

“Integrity of the poll process this time is high. We will be using the integrated electoral management systems to relay voter turnout every 3 hours as well as number of ballot papers issued. All these will be recorded in a polling day diary,” said Mr. Chebukati.
