NO PAY for county staff, suppliers as IFMIS breaks down

The government’s Integrated Finance Management Information System (IFMIS) is currently experiencing a downtime and has not been functioning for the last two days.

The Council of Governors (CoG), through a statement to newsrooms, lamented the technical hitch complaining of inability to fulfill counties finance obligations including paying workers, vendors and suppliers.

The biggest worry for the county bosses is the event the government may level the blame on them in case of incoherence that might arise from the problem.

“Something sinister could be going on, then county leaders would be blamed for any inconsistencies that would arise,” said CoG chairman, Governor Peter Munya.

The Council of Governors chairman appealed to the national government to move with speed to resurrect the system to able the devolved units resume their normal functions especially during the busy festive season.

IFMIS has in the recent past come under huge criticism for allegedly abetting corruption both at the central and county governments levels with some cases being blamed on password leakages.

The National Youth Service (NYS) Scam and the Kilifi County corruption scandal were majorly blamed on mishandling of the finance management system.

The government has, however, emphatically defended the system terming it as a great tool that can curb corruption in the country if used appropriately.
