No To Anti-radicalization, Activists

Civil society groups have threatened to boycott anti-radicalization programs if the government does not stop its witch-hunt by targeting civil societies and human rights groups in the country.

National Civil Society Congress leaders led by Churchil Suba and Ndung’u Wainaina are now demanding the registration of two coast based human rights groups Haki Afrika and Muslims for Human Rights-MUHURI.

The activists have argued Haki Africa and MUHURI are being targeted for speaking out against extra judicial killings at the coast, saying the government is yet to provide proof linking them to terrorism.

The activists have further asked government to deal decisively with persons linked to terror activities instead of unfairly targeting and shutting down civil society groups.

The government froze the MUHURI and Haki Africa bank accounts on suspicion that the human rights groups were funding terror.

The government has gazetted a list of 86 individuals and businesses whose accounts have been frozen for allegedly financing terrorism.

Treasury PS Kimani Thuge said the accounts had been red-flagged over suspicious financial activities.

The freezing of accounts came after the Garissa University College attack that left 148 people dead and 79 others injured.
