North Eastern Leaders To List Al-Shabaab Sympathisers Within a Week

The leaders who included governors and Members of Parliament from Garissa county, Mandera county and Wajir county said that some mosques have been used as places of radicalization.

They promised to carry out investigations into everyone involved in the running of the said mosques and other institution of learning Islam so as to weed out those who radicalize the youth.

This they said will go a long way into fighting terrorism in the country.

“We recognize the reality of collaborators amongst our communities, and we will immediately commence to identify, document and expose all the members, financiers and sympathisers of Al-Shabaab within the next one month,” said Majority Leader Aden Duale.

INDIVIDUAL LEVEL

Duale added that they had been doing the same at individual level but have now realized that the magnitude of the situations requires them to put more effort in exposing those involved in terrorism activities.

This announcement comes hot in the heels of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s speech on Thursday where he told the nation that radicalization happens within our communities.

“We must tell the truth, that the radicalization and training of this terrorists is not done in the bush, it is done in some mosques with the help of some rogue imams. We must ask where are the political leaders when this is happening?”

Mr Duale promised that the leaders will address the issue in collaboration with SUPKEM and the council of Imams.

“We will immediately review all personalities and institutions involved in religious activities, including mosques and institutions of learning,” said he, adding that they will mobilize their constituents within a week to compile and submit details of suspects with government agencies validating the information to guard against any victimization.
