North Eastern Leaders Vow to Fight Nkaissery’s Extension of Curfew

Speaking at the graduation of Najah Madrassa, Garissa County Woman Representative Mrs Shukran Gure said the curfew imposed in the four counties was illegal and against the constitution since it has restricted the freedom of movement and worship.

She said she would table a petition against Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery in Parliament on the 8th of June when the house resumes from recess, because she claimed the dusk to dawn curfew has affected residents’ economical wellbeing.

She alleged that security officers are using the curfew to harass, intimidate and extort unsuspecting residents, noting that the curfew will not solve the security crisis in the region.

The leaders, at the same time, reiterated their support and commitment to assist the national government in fighting terrorism, while calling for enhancement of security in the county.

Harassment by KDF

Lagdera Member of Parliament Mohamed Shidiye faulted the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) for carrying out the duties of police, and in the process harassing innocent civilians.

Mr Shidiye also called on the government to assist the neighbouring war-torn Somalia, if they are to win the fight against terrorism in the country, noting that Kenya should increase its presence and have the Somali embassy in Somalia rather than in Nairobi.

His Dadaab Counterpart Mohamed Dahiye appealed to the local county government to assist in erecting fences around institutions that can be easy targets for the Al Shabaab.

Also in attendance were Garissa Governor Nathif Jama, acting County Commissioner James Kianda and several members of the county assembly and officials from the county and national government.
