NTSA kicks off operation on unroadworthy vehicles

The National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) kicked-off a countrywide a clampdown exercise on Tuesday in Kisii County on traffic rules non-compliant vehicles.

Several PSVs and private cars were impounded and subjected to inspection at Kisii Central Police Station leading to the plucking off of the registration numbers.

Over 10 PSVs were pulled over to the Police yard at the start of the exercise as other drivers kept off the roads for fear of arrest.

The impounded vehicles were said to be unroadworthy, tampered with or having fake stickers among traffic offences.

Government Vehicle Inspection Unit also pounced on unsuspecting GK drivers and nabbed those found to be defective or on unauthorized assignments.

Speaking to the media at the Police Station, NTSA Regional Coordinator, Aden Adow, explained that the crackdown was mounted at the expiry of a two-week period agreed by stakeholders to be compliant.

He said the exercise will continue indefinitely until the death toll in the region was considerably reduced on the roads.
