The National Transport and Safety Authority(NTSA) board plans to privatise the motor vehicle inspection units to reduce backlog.
According to the agency director Zachary Mukui, there are only 17 inspection centers across the country, yet the numbers of vehicles to be inspected are in the thousands.
He reiterated that the inclusion of private vehicles has stretched their capacity.
Speaking during an event for matatu owners in Eldoret, the NTSA official assured them that the refresher driving courses recently announced was not a punitive measure.
