Number of students meeting varsity requirement drop

Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i on Wednesday, December 20 revealed that the number of students who attained the minimum university qualification points in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) has reduced.

The CS was however reluctant to give the exact figure.

Last year, all the 88,929 candidates who scored between A and C+ in the Form Four examination got places in public universities. The figure represented 15.41 per cent of the total number of students who sat for KCPE 2016.

In 2015 KCSE, 169,492 (32.23 per cent) attained mean grade C+ and above.

Matiang’i who was speaking during the release of the 2017 KCSE results at Nairobi School, further revealed that students who scored mean grade A (Plain) in this year’s KCSE improved by one to a total of 142 compared to last year’s 141.

Matiang’i further announced a significant drop in the number of A- (minuses) in this year’s exam to 2, 715 compared to last year’s 4, 645.

The CS however noted an improvement in performance in 13 subjects, among them English, Mathematics and Geography.

The Education CS also revealed that female candidates performed better than their male counterparts in this year’s KCSE, with the female candidates beating their male counterparts in six subjects.

County and extra-county schools also posted commendable results in this year’s KCSE compared to last year.

The schools which registered notable performances, and got a mention by the CS, include: Kenya High School, Alliance High School and Pangani Girls’ High School.

Kenya High School also recorded the highest number of As in this year’s KCSE.

This year’s KCSE top performer is Karimi Naomi Kawira, who scored an A (Plain) and a mean score of 87.011 from Pangani Girls’ High School, Nairobi.

The second best performer is Sharon Chepchumba from Moi Girls’ High, Eldoret who attained a mean score of 86.830.

Other top performers are: Kamau Brian Maina from Alliance High School (86. 757), Odero Donatta from Lenana School (86.561), Harriet Mueke from Mary Hills High School (85.956), Brian Ongiri Okundi from Kanga High School (85.944), Moraa Mong’ina from Pangani Girls’ High School (85.910), Mwathathe Emily from Pangani Girls’ High School (85.883), Wahome Cherry Wanjiku from Moi Girls’ High School in Eldoret among others.
