Nyamira court sentences woman for aborting 7-month-old fetus

A 35-year-old woman arrested on charges of aborting a 7-month-old fetus from Bonyengwe village in Nyamira has been slapped with a one-year home arrest.

On Tuesday, a Nyamira court convicted Linet Kemunto after she confessed to have procured an abortion and thereafter dumped the fetus at a river.

Ms Kemunto asked the Resident Magistrate Cyprian Waswa for leniency saying she has been living in poverty and could not afford to raise another child.

The court heard that Ms Kemunto has been living with her other children, including one who is disabled after she was kicked out of her home by her husband.

The woman will now serve her sentence at home and will be required to undergo a psychiatric examination.
