Nyandarua Farmers Get Subsidized Seedlings

This was part of the County Government's initiative to boost food production in the area.

The farmers distributed a consignment of clean and certified potato and fruit seedlings.

This meant that more farmers were able to purchase the subsidized seedlings.

Farming is the economic backbone of the county.

According to Agatha Thuo, the area is the leading producer of potatoes in the country.

The produce fetches the county Kshs. 6.5 billon annually.

This makes potato the second highest income earning after dairy which earns the country about Kshs. 7 billion annually.

Thuo said that the number can increase as the average production of potatoes is currently at 40 to 50 bags per acre whereas local farms have the potential to produce as high as 160 bags per acre.

County Governor Daniel Waithaka wants Nyandarua to become specialized in the production of potatoes, fruits and milk.

He said his government was committed to ensure the county was producing the highest quantity of potatoes, milk and fruits.
