Nyanza MPs Oppose Sugar Imports

The MPs, James K'yoo and David Ochieng faulted the government for planning to shift focus of sugar cane farming from western region to the coast region

The MPs argued that doing so would not resolve the woes facing cane farmers countrywide

'Transferring problems facing the sugarcane industry from one region to another will not solve any problem' said Ochieng

He said that if the issue is the deficiency of production of sugar cane variety, then the government should ensure all regions get the fast growing variety to enhance capacity building in sugarcane companies.

He at the same time regretted that the country is importing too much sugar into the country hence killing the local sugar industry

Muhoroni MP James K'yoo said that local sugar is dying at the expense of imported sugar.

He added that some importers dodge paying taxes through cartels at the port hence smuggle sugar and sell it at lower prices in the country.

He called upon the Kenya Sugar Board to stop licensing more sugar importers as this will kill the local sugar industry.
