Nyatike teachers demand hardship allowance

Teachers working in Nyatike sub-county, Migori County, want the government to give them hardship allowance saying Nyatike region is a hardship area.

Led by Nyatike Sub-County Kenya Primary Heads Association chairman Mr Hezron Orondo, the teachers said they face many challenges ranging from the scarcity of food and water, flooding to poor accessibility of their working stations.

Orondo said Nyatike is no different from areas such as Turkana, where teachers have been getting hardship allowances.

His sentiment was echoed by Wilfred Nchogu, who urged the government to declare the region a hardship area this year, saying teachers fear to work in Nyatike because of the challenges.

The teachers aired the grievances during a meeting convened by Nyatike Constituency aspirant Fredrick Ogenga to launch his election manifesto.

They (teachers) vowed to support politicians who would champion for their welfare.

Ogenga wooed the teachers to support his candidature saying he would reciprocate by ensuring they get the hardship allowance, arguing that Nyatike is a semi-arid region and therefore teachers ought to be entitled to hardship allowances like in other dry areas.
