Nyeri County gets new governor as Wamathai is sworn in

Nyeri County Deputy Governor Samuel Wamathai has been sworn in as the new Nyeri governor for the remainder of the term before the August 8 election following the death of Governor Nderitu Gachagua.

Wamathai’s swearing in ceremony at the county headquarters in Nyeri town was well-attended by leaders and residents of the Mount Kenya region county, who in a common voice hailed his leadership qualities saying he was a strong pillar in the late Gachagua’s administration.

The new governor takes over leadership as the family continues with plans to bring Gachagua’s body back to the country for burial.

Family spokesperson Rigathi Gachagua announced that the body would arrive in the country from London on Thursday, March 3rd 2017.

Discussions are ongoing between the family, county government and the national government on whether to accord the late governor a state burial.

The Late governor’s brother, Rigathi Gachagua, said a number of governors are planning to travel to London to accompany the body back to the country.

Nderitu Gachagua died on February 24 at Royal Marsden Hospital in London, United Kingdom, where he was undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.
