The Nyeri County government has now banned food hawking in the county following reports of rising cases of Cholera outbreaks in several parts of the country.

This comes following media reports last week that 52 staff members of The Nairobi Hospital were affected by Cholera, and that 1,350 cases and six deaths had been reported nationally since April 16, 2019.

While issuing the ban, Nyeri County Health CEC Racheal Kamau – according to the Daily Nation – further ordered for re-inspection of food outlets in the county.

According to Ms. Kamau, this is to ensure the outlets abide by the county’s Public Health Act, hence reducing the outbreak.

She also urged residents to cease from buying food from hawkers  as well as outlets operating without licences.

“Due to the close proximity and the frequent interaction between Nyeri and the affected Nairobi County, there is increased danger of cross-border transmission if necessary precautions are not put in place,” Ms. Kamau told the paper.

Nairobi Hospital, together with the Ministry of Health and other relevant Nairobi County agencies, however assured the public that the Cholera outbreak at the facility was under control.
