Nyeri county in bid to weed out ghost workers

Nyeri County government has launched a code of conduct and ethics as well as staff identity cards for public officers in the county public service.

The launch, aimed at weeding out ghost workers and enhancing service delivery, was officiated by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and his Machakos counterpart Alfred Mutua, who is on a two-day tour of the county.

According to Governor Kahiga, the county intends to re-engineer its workforce to make it more efficient, adding that the identity cards will “help identify the real workers in the county public service.”

Governor Mutua, on his part, said that the move was an important step in the county public service and should be emulated across the country.

Counties have in the past struggled to manage a ballooning wage bill and most have struggled to deal with ghost workers.

Nyeri county government workers will be issued with a smart identification card at their work station to ensure all those in the county payroll have designated work.
