Nyeri County to buy underwear for boys

School-going boys in both in public and private primary schools in Nyeri County might soon benefit from at least three pairs of underwear each, if a proposal in the County Assembly is approved.

According to the Nyeri County Chief Officer in charge of Special Programmes Beth Karimi, the county decided to give underwear after the boys felt left out when sanitary towels were distributed to the girls.

The proposal, if approved, will see the county spend Ksh 1.6 million on the project.

In February 2016, the county launched a programme to donate sanitary towels targeting over 9,000 girls in their final year of primary school education within the county.

The initiative came after a report tied their wanting performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations in the county to lack of sanitary pads.

According to Nyeri County Assembly Finance Committee chair Duncan Gituanja, in the 2016-2017 budget proposal to the county assembly, the county government has suggested increased funding for Education, ICT and Special Programmes to cater for the underwear provision.

Under social programmes, the proposed Elimu Fund will provide underwear to boys and purchase sanitary towels for girls.

Mwangi Ndururi, a headteacher at Kingongo Primary School, which accommodates pupils from slums, said the move by the county government will greatly assist in improving the pupils hygiene and especially those from a poor background.
