Nyeri inmate killed over money
Tension is high at the King’ong’o Maximum Prison in Nyeri after an inmate serving a 15 year jail term was on Sunday clobbered to death with a hammer by his fellow inmate after they quarreled over money.
According to Nyeri Police Boss Charles Rotich, the incident happened at around 2AM where the deceased, Shem Kariuki, argued with another inmate, Peter Gachau, who serving life imprisonment and the argument escalated to a fight.
Rotich said the two allegedly differed over an undisclosed amount of money before Kariuki was hit by the assailant on the head and died on the spot.
The police Boss added that investigations are currenly underway over the incident and further details will be realeased after the next of kin are notified over the death.
The body was moved to Nyeri County Referral Hospital mortuary.
Efforts to access the prison proved futile as it was highly guarded.
