A senior Nyeri Magistrate was on Monday arraigned in court and charged with the brutal murder of her husband, lawyer Robert Chesang.

Mr. Chesang was on February 17, 2019 fatally shot seven times by two gunmen at his home in Lukenya area, Machakos County.

The magistrate, Maisy Pauline Omungala Chesang, was arrested on Sunday evening and charged alongside three others among them retired National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer Laurence Metayo Lempesi, police constable Peter Muendo Mbithi and Alex Wanyonyi Wanyama.

Appearing before Magistrate Elvis Micheka, the four were detained at Athi River Police Station for nine days pending investigations. They are expected back in court on March 12, 2019.

Police officers, who spoke to Citizen Digital following the murder, said Mr. Chesang was alone when he was accosted, adding that seven spent cartridges of an AK47 rifle were recovered at the scene.

“Preliminary reports reaching us indicate that Mr. Chesang was home alone at the time of the incident and may have been tortured first then later dragged from his bedroom to the living room before being shot seven times in cold blood,” read a statement from Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Allen Gichuhi.
