At least seventeen people including Rware Ward MCA Paul Kanyari and his personal assistant were arrested on Friday evening inside a bar in Nyeri County.
According to Nyeri Central Sub-County Police Commander Paul Kuria the group was rounded up at a guest house known as Laquizine in King’ong’o area enjoying drinks.
The police commander said they were alerted by residents in the neighbourhood as the revelers were flouting a directive for closure of all bars across the country amid the coronavirus outbreak.
The offenders, other than being prosecuted, will also be subjected to a mandatory 14-day quarantine.
It is alleged that several other MCAs escaped arrest but the police boss said they are processing the suspects to establish if there were other accomplices.
The police commander urged the public to be vigilant and give volunteer information to the police on members of public violating Covid-19 safety regulations.
