Nyeri MCAs selling assets to service loans

Nyeri Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have decried the delay in payment of their salaries, a situation they say has forced some of them to dispose off assets to service their loans.

Majority Leader, Duncan Gituanja, says that they have not been remunerated for the past three months.

“Everyone is entitled to a salary after working for thirty days, so they have been discriminating against the Assembly; paying the staff members of the executive and not paying the staff of the assembly,” he said.

Gituanja told Radio Citizen that they have written to the Controller of Budget, Agnes Odhiambo, to intervene and find a solution to the problem.

“She promised to sort out that issue and we hope she will address it fast enough.”

He further went on to say that they will continue fighting for the people of Nyeri and address any issues in regard to misappropriation of funds.

The MCAs have linked their woes to the recent impeachment of Governor Nderitu Gachagua, who was, however, cleared by the Senate for lack of enough evidence to send him home.

The MCAs had impeached the Governor accusing him of abuse of office and misappropriation of resources, allegations Gachagua has on several occasions dismissed as malicious.

The Governor said that the move by the MCAs to impeach him was informed by his declination to assent to a demand by the Ward Representatives to allocate close to Ksh 100 million for construction of their health club.
