Nyeri: Probe starts after prison officer found dead inside his house

Police in Nyeri are investigating the death of a prison officer, Boniface Mwanzia, who was discovered dead in his home on Friday.

According to a police report filed at Nyeri Police Station, a security officer at the King’ong’o police station informed cops that the officer was discovered dead inside his house after being unreachable.

“Boniface Mwanzia was found lying lifeless on a sofa in his house within the prison quarters,” the police report explains

The alarm had been raised after the officer failed to answer his wife’s repeated phone calls, prompting his colleagues to go to his house to check on him.

“The spouse to the deceased had called the prisons’ office reporting that her husband was not picking calls from around 5pm on Thursday,” the police report says.

When his colleagues went to the officer’s quarters, they discovered that the door had been bolted from the inside.

No one answered their knocks, despite the fact that they could see the officer from a crack in the window, lying on the couch, motionless.

“They were forced to break a window pane at the door in order to unlock it and immediately informed the police,” the police said.

According to the preliminary police report, the body had no visible injuries, but there was foam oozing from the mouth and nose.

No note was discovered at the scene, according to police officers familiar with the incident.

The body of the officer was removed to the Nyeri County referral hospital on Friday.
