Nyeri residents hold protests for businessman killed by attackers hired by his father

Residents of Mweiga in Nyeri county went to the streets in a peaceful procession demanding justice for Daniel Mwangi, the slain businessman who is said to have been killed by people hired by his father Wangondu Kanini for Ksh.160,000.

The residents carrying twigs, placards and pictures of the murdered man went around the town saying that they want the justice system to work with speed to deliver justice for the 32 year old.

“When it was reported the suspects had been arrested we were happy. Na kesho wanaporudishwa kotini tunataka justice to be served. Sisi hatuna uwezo sisi hatuna pesa lakini Mwangi tulikuwa tunampenda kama rafiki. All we can ask for ni justice,” said Christine Njeri, a resident of the area.

“It is so painful to hear that the father was involved. It’s so painful to lose a friend and a customer even today I feel the loss of Mwangi in my life,” added Ben Kariuki, another resident.

They have described Mwangi as a hard working youth and they say they can not co-exist with his killers saying there could be hostility between the suspects and the community.

Five suspects including the father of the murdered man are set to be arraigned on Friday.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the victims father hired killers at a fee of Ksh.160,000 and facilitated his driver with Ksh.20,000 to form a team of murderers.

Wangondu, the driver and three other suspects are in police custody and are expected back in court  on Friday in Nyeri.
