Nyongo Expresses Hope In The Referendum Push

Speaking during citizen TV’s Power Breakfast show, Nyong’o said CORD and the Council of Governors will continue to push for the referendum in order to increase the allocation of funds to counties.

He was speaking a day after more than 20 Jubilee governors abandoned the push for referendum spearheaded by the Council of Governors.

Nyong’o has also remained optimistic that majority of Kenyans will support their referendum bid.

Meanwhile, West-Pokot County Governor Simon Kachapin has denied abandoning the push for a national referendum.

Kachapin who was elected on a Kanu ticket has distanced himself from the group of URP and TNA governors who have quit the calls for a referendum after holding meetings with party officials.

Speaking to hot 96, Kachapin said he will continue to support the Council of Governors bid for a referendum to ensure that revenue allocated to counties is increased from 15% to at least 40%.

Through their pro-referendum drive dubbed “Pesa Mashinani” the governors are pushing for the government to allocate more funds to counties.

The county bosses also want to get clarity on their mandate on matters such as the management of land, natural resources and forestry, and want discussions on laws allowing the recall and impeachment of elected leaders.

The governors are also pushing for the formation a Loans and Grants Council.
