NYS scandal: Selesio Karanja sentenced to 4 years in jail

A man linked to the first National Youth Service (NYS) scandal, Selesio Karanja, will spend four years in jail after a court found him guilty of fraud.

He however has the option of paying a Ksh.4million fine.

Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi has also barred Karanja from ever holding any other public office.

Karanja was a supply chain assistant at the time the scandal was unearthed.

On Thursday, the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court found him guilty of fraudulent practice involving a tender worth Ksh.47.6million.

The accused had earlier been charged alongside former Devolution PS Engineer Peter Mangiti and 23 others who were acquitted.

Karanja was then charged on his own for inserting Dama Services Ltd in the tender opening register for the procurement of training materials in the Automotive Engineering faculty tender No.NYS/RT/29/2014-2015, a move which had not been approved.
