NYS suspects to know their fate

All 43 suspects charged over the multi-billion scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS) will this morning know their fate on whether the High Court will release them on bail or not.

The suspects who include PS Lilian Omollo, NYS former director Richard Ndubai, businessmen and other public servants had earlier asked the high court to release them on bail.

They maintained that they do not pose a flight risk and will abide by the rules and directions given to them by the court.

The prosecution however opposed their release saying they are likely to interfere with the witnesses lined up to testify against them.

Their plea at the High Court followed a ruling by Anti-Corruption Court Magistrate Douglas Ogoti that denied them bail.

He noted that the suspects are charged with economic crimes which are serious offences.

“It is the opinion of the court that it can lead to anarchy, threat to peace and national security. This in itself is a compelling reason why bail should and is hereby denied,” Ogoti ruled.

The court detained them pending the determination of their bail hearing on Tuesday.

The ruling is set to be delivered by Presiding Justice Hedwig Ongudi.
