NYS will reclaim lost glory, promises new boss Ndubai

The new National Youth Service (NYS) Director General Richard Ndubai has promised to restore NYS’s lost glory after corruption scandals rocked the institution last year.

Speaking in Kongowea, Mombasa as 850 youth were recruited to clean the area market, Ndubai beseeched Kenyans to have faith in the new management.

On his part, Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has called on the government to ensure that plans to recruit rehabilitated drug addicts are implemented.

The NYS has been rocked in a multi-million shillings tender scandal following an affidavit linking former Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru to the Ksh791 million loss.

In early February, the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Youth Affairs Sicily Kariuki said projects set to help the youth in Kenya through the National Youth Service (NYS) will commence in a month’s time.

The projects, which were founded by Waiguru when she was in office, were stopped following graft allegations in the services.

According to the CS, the registration exercise for the youth is taking place in various counties with the aim of registering more than 90,000 young people.

Ndubai, a long-serving public servant and a former Permanent Secretary, was sworn-in as the new Director General of NYS in January.

Speaking when he witnessed the swearing-in ceremony at State House, Mombasa, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the resumption of the Service’s youth empowerment programme.

He said the goal of empowering the country’s young people to enable them participate actively in nation building – the main aim of the NYS at independence – remains the core mandate of the Service.
