Nzoia Sugar not closed – Chairman

Nzoia Sugar Company chairman has distanced the company’s ongoing maintenance works with the Kenya-Uganda sugar deal that pundits are alleging will cripple the sugar industry.

Speaking at the Company’s Head Quarters, Joash Wamangoli refuted claims that the company had been closed and instead clarified that the maintenance works were a routine process done annually and will be completed by September.

Wamangoli said that the exercise was intended to improve the milling capacity of the factory to enable it competitively operate in the market.

He, however, added that the company was watching keenly the emerging issues in the ongoing sugar debate and urged leaders not to miss the point by playing politics with people lives.

He cautioned that if the government withdraws from Nzoia Sugar the company go down as Pan Paper Mills did.

The chairman noted that the company was on the right track, saying its as at Friday the 14th of August, 2015 stood at about 1000 tonnes while the annual production for the year 2014 was 86,000 tonnes, its record best.
