Obama invites teen who made clock to White House

US President Barack Obama has invited a 14-year-old, Ahmed Mohamed, who was arrested for making a clock, to the White House next month for a science fair.

Mohamed, who was arrested after taking a homemade clock to school, has accepted the invitation, days after he was arrested by school officials and handed to the police for interrogation for presenting the clock to his teacher.

Mohamed said: “I built the clock to impress my teacher, but when I showed it to her she thought it was a threat to her. It was really sad that she took a wrong impression of it.”

The boy has since been suspended until Thursday and is contemplating transferring schools.

After his arrest, Ahmed was taken from the school to police headquarters where he was interrogated about his intentions with the device, seen as a security risk.

The Irving Independent School District Spokeswoman Lesley Weaver has stood by the administration’s decision to arrest Ahmed saying they have an obligation to protect other students and to keep the school safe.

Earlier this year, Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne endorsed a state bill that would forbid judges from using foreign laws to inform their rulings saying imams were “bypassing American courts” by participating meditations.
