Obama should release Kenyan suspect at Guantanamo prison

Hours before the President of the United States Barack Obama jets into the country, a section of Coast leaders are now demanding for the release of a terror suspect of Kenyan origin detained in Guantanamo Bay Prison.

Speaking at Longo Primary School in Mtongwe, Mombasa County, Senator Hassan Omar called for the release of Abdul Malik whom he says has been cleared of terror charges in the U.S. yet he is still languishing in prison.

Omar pointed out that President Obama pledged to close down Guantanamo Bay Prison during his first campaigns for presidency hence should intervene to have him set free.

Abdul Malik was arrested by anti-terror police for allegedly being part of terror network that orchestrated Mombasa’s Paradise hotel attack in Kikambala, Kilifi County, in 2002 and handed over to American operatives.

Guantanamo is a U.S. military prison located within a naval base in Cuba and has seen over 700 prisoners walk through its gates since the prison opened on January 11th, 2002.

Nine of the prisoners are reported to have died over the years due to torture while 122 are still in detention at the facility as of February this year.
