Obama surprises Biden, awards him Presidential Medal of Freedom

U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday (January 12) surprised his Vice President, Joe Biden, awarding him the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a farewell ceremony at the White House.

“This honor is not only well beyond what I deserve, but it’s a reflection of the extent and generosity of your spirit. I don’t deserve this, but I know it came from the president’s heart,” Biden said.

Obama said the medal was awarded to Biden “with distinction,” a particular honor that has been granted to Pope Johnn Paul II, President Ronald Reagan, and General Colin Powell. It was the only time Obama has bestowed the honor “with distinction.”

The Medal of Freedom is the highest award a president can bestow on a civilian.
