Obasanjo challenges Africa to unite in war against terror

Former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo has called for a collective initiative in the fight against insecurity.

Speaking at the 5th Africa Governance, Leadership and Management Convention in Kwale County, Obasanjo said that insecurity is a major hurdle in Africa’s developmental growth.

Obasanjo called on African states to come together and help combat insecurity which he said was the major stumbling block to Africa’s development.

Obasanjo said that terrorism poses a universal threat and needed concerted efforts in the bid to eradicate it.

He further cited poverty, illiteracy and unemployment as the major causes of extremism, which is a major factor contributing to terrorism in Sub-Saharan Africa.

He also hailed the private sector for the critical role they play in building the economy despite the many challenges that they face.

The deputy president of African Union Erastus Mwencha called inclusive leadership and the need to move beyond borders in addressing insecurity and terrorism in the continent.

Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya added that insecurity has deprived counties of development and investment opportunities.
