Court detains OCS who allegedly killed man

A senior police officer who allegedly shot and killed a 27-year-old man at Burnt Forest town in Uasin Gishu County will be detained for 10 days as investigations surrounding the incident continue.

Sipian Lidade; the OCS Tarakwa Police Station, appeared at Eldoret Law Courts on Tuesday but he was not formally charged since the lead investigator asked the court for 14 days to conclude investigations but was only allowed 10 days.

The extra days allocated by the court will also allow witnesses to record statements connected to the murder while the body of the deceased will undergo post-mortem.

The case will be mentioned in court on July 11 this year.

According to reports, the senior police officer is said to have fatally shot the young man who was accused of being a bhang peddler in the area.

Police denied the claims saying some of the suspects attempted to escape prompting them to open fire, shooting one of them who died on the spot.

Following the incident, residents held demonstrations and blocked the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway paralyzing business activities at the town on Saturday.
