October 26 repeat poll is a must-President Kenyatta to Odinga

President Uhuru Kenyatta has remained upbeat that the October 26 Repeat Presidential Election must be held as planned, despite NASA insisting that they will not participate in the fresh poll unless Jubilee drops their proposed amendments to election laws and reforms in the electoral commission.

Speaking during a campaign rally in Kakamega on Saturday, September 30, the Head of State together with his deputy William Ruto defended as necessary the Jubilee-initiated changes to poll laws, with the duo saying that the reforms are intended to seal loopholes pointed out by the Supreme Court during the August 8 Presidential Election Petition.

The proposed amendments to election laws could radically erode the powers of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson and dilute the importance of electronic transmission of results.

“Raila Odinga should know that he is only a candidate and therefore cannot assume the role of IEBC.  What is the problem if want to craft a law that says it will be an offence if a returning officer will not sign election results forms and therefore be held accountable?” said the Jubilee Party leader.

Deputy President, William Ruto, strongly rebuked the National Super Alliance (NASA) demand of ‘no reforms no election’ adding that the opposition wants to prevent the repeat poll from happening so as to create a constitutional crisis, that he insists, will not surface.

“NASA clearly said that they want reforms for them to participate in the repeat election. We, Jubilee, are now initiating reforms in parliament again they don’t want that,” said the DP.

The ruling party leaders, who were speaking in a 20,000 delegates meeting in Kakamega, reiterated that President Kenyatta is fully in charge of the country and that there was no power vacuum, calling upon the Western electorates to vote for Jubilee in the fresh election later this month.

Local leaders including Senate Speaker, Ken Lusaka, former National Assembly speaker, Kenneth Marende, former MPs, Ababu Namwamba and Paul Otuoma, promised the president of massive support in a region that is, however, an opposition stronghold.
