Odinga: Govt has Failed Kenyans on Security

Mr. Odinga, who was speaking during the opening of the 2nd Annual Devolution Conference in Kisumu, accused the government of failing to secure the country and assure the citizenry of security.

Odinga said that the government’s handling of security is a total failure and there is a need to re-think its security priorities.

The former Premier pointed out that the government failed to contain the Garissa University College terror attack that led to the death of 148 people despite having intelligence information.

He questioned how the security equipment and machinery such as aircrafts were being handled saying that top ranking officers had resulted to ‘privatizing’ them.

“How can it be explained that the Recce squad had to go all the way from their headquarter along Thika Road to Wilson Airport to board a flight to Garissa instead of using the military grounds in Eastleigh?” quizzed Mr. Odinga.

Strategy to pull out KDF from Somalia

“The government needs to get its priorities right on security. We cannot afford to continue losing more Kenyans to terrorists and other militia.”

Mr. Odinga accused the government of failing to properly use the provided intelligence to contain terror attacks before they take place.

He called on the government to work on a strategy to pull out the Kenya Defence Forces from Somalia saying that it is not a show of cowardice but a security strategy.

“Withdrawing our forces from Somalia does not make us cowards, it is a strategy to secure our country and its population,” he added.

“When the United States withdrew its forces from Somalia, it was not because it had a weak military but it was a way of securing its population.”

Odinga called on the government to overhaul the country’s security strategy.
