Odinga raises alarm over controversial Muranga Water Project

Nominated senator Oburu Odinga has faulted President Uhuru’s government for allegedly looting money over the controversial Murang’a water project.

Oburu claimed the Murang’a Water Project was detrimental to the environment, adding that it would lead to desertification of different counties.

“Uhuru is looting the resources of this country. How can you say you consulted Murang’a County Assembly when the project affects many counties in the region?” quizzed Odinga.

His sentiments echo Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s claims concerning the much contested project.

“The country will turn into a desert in the next five years if this project continues,” said Raila earlier in the month, when he accused the Jubilee Administration of carrying out secret projects.

Raila alleged the project, that is said to tap water from Maragua, Gikige and Irati rivers, would lead to the desertification of counties on the lower side of Tana River.

The government has however increased funds into the project, with claims of increasing development in the city.

“We want to solve water problems in Murang’a County, due to the persistent perennial disadvantages,” said Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday.

Odinga’s claims come days after senators called for an open audit over the Murang’a Water Project.
