ODM nulifies Morintat nomination, pledges smooth process in second phase

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) national elections board has nullified the controversial victory of Peter Oiboo Morintat for the MP ticket in Kilgoris Constituency.

Morintat was declared the winner of the Saturday, April 14, ODM primaries despite being busted at a hotel stuffing ballot boxes.

The party has scheduled the repeat nomination on Thursday, April 20, alongside other botched primaries in Khwisero Constituency, Matungu, Batsotso and Butali/Chegulo wards.

Gubernatorial primaries for Busia County will be repeated on Tuesday, April 25, as earlier slated.

The party termed the exercise so far completed in seven counties as credible and above board, saying the irregularities reported barely represent 10 per cent of the whole exercise.

The party was also impressed by the turnout that averaged at 42 per cent of registered voters.

It, however, assured supporters that it has taken measures to remedy glitches experienced in the first three days of the exercise.

The party’s national elections board chair, Judith Pareno, announced that elections materials for areas scheduled to hold primaries in the second phase starting tomorrow, April 18, have already being dispatched.

On Tuesday, April 18, the exercise moves to Taita Taveta, Trans Nzoia, Nyamira, Nakuru and Kajiado counties.

Pareno castigated Kajiado County Director of Education for banning the exercise in schools.

She insisted that schools are gazetted polling centres and therefore they will proceed with the exercise as planned.

She assured all aspirants that the party is committed to free, fair and transparent primaries, and does not favour any candidate.
