ODM terms Sonko 2017 chaos claims as ‘mafia-like criminal acts’, demands probe
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) now wants an inquiry opened into a confession made by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko that he, alongside other senior government officials, stage-managed destruction of property in 2017 and laid the blame on the opposition party.
ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, in a statement released on Monday, said the party wants the motives of these acts as well as the persons behind them uncovered.
Sifuna also stated that the revelation by the ousted city boss has served to vindicate the party from claims by opponents as being perpetrators of violence.
“For a long time, our detractors have used and abused state power, mainstream and social media in a systematic attempt to depict our Party as violent and purveyors of anarchy. This view has been perpetuated despite our sincere efforts to communicate the truth – that it is the enemies of ODM that have authored, planned and executed these dirty schemes,” read the statement.
“We are slowly but surely being vindicated as the people behind these nefarious schemes slowly emerge from their dark hideouts, to confess to their crimes. The recent confession by the disgraced former Governor of Nairobi, Mike Sonko that he participated in stage managing violence and destruction of property that he and his co-conspirators then pinned on ODM, is welcome but amounts to too little too late.”
The statement further added: “ODM demands a full inquiry into the matter so as to establish the motives and extent of these mafia-like covert criminal acts as well as all persons and institutions involved.”
Sonko, in a now viral video recorded during a rally in Dagoretti South on Sunday, claimed himself alongside Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho orchestrated the destruction of vehicles to taint ODM’s public image.
“Mimi nimefanya kazi na Deep State…nimefanya kazi na system ya mheshimiwa Uhuru Kenyatta. Na mimi kuna kitu nataka kutoboa leo, nitoboe ama nisitoboe?” Posed Sonko, before going ahead to add that;
“Sai tumeona Deep State na system wameanza kuchoma magari isemekane ni ma-hustler wanachoma magari. Mimi nataka kutoboa niseme hivi; 2017, wakati kulikuwa na maandamano ya ODM, mimi na Kibicho na Deep State wale wengine na system, tulienda kuprint t-shirts za ODM, tukaenda kununua magari second hand kwa ma-showroom tukazichoma huko Ngong Road ionekane ni ODM kumbe ni Deep State na system.”
PS Kibicho has since recorded a statement at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters following the allegations.
