ODM to disqualify politicians campaigning before burial of late Migori Senator

Migori County Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party officials want the IEBC to take action against senatorial hopefuls who have already started campaigning for the seat left vacant following the demise of Senator Ben Oluoch Okello.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, Migori ODM party chairman Philip Makabong’o said it was “very unfortunate” that some political leaders eyeing the seat had already began campaigns even before the late legislator is laid to rest.

Makabong’o further stated that IEBC was also yet to declare an official campaign period for the seat, adding that campaigning before a green light from the electoral body was a breach to the electoral laws.

The party chair therefore urged the electoral commission to take action against individuals already advancing on their campaigns.

Makabongo said ODM had also put in place measures to track senatorial hopefuls already carrying out their political activities secretly, adding that the party would disqualify them at the nomination level.

He added that the party was working closely with the electoral body to disqualify individuals breaching electoral laws.

The ODM pointman also called for unity among political leaders and locals in Migori County ahead of the burial of the late Senator Ben Oluoch Okelo scheduled for July 9, 2018.

The Senator died at the MP Shah Hospital in Nairobi on Tuesday after a long battle with throat cancer.
