ODM to issue direct tickets as Jubilee extends nomination papers deadline

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) now says it will give direct tickets to aspirants in regions where there will be no stiff competition in primaries ahead of the August General Election.

According to ODM National Elections Board chair, Judy Pareno, the opposition party will conduct nominations from April 1 – 22 in all the 47 counties.

Pareno has at the same time indicated that the Orange party is adequately prepared and should the united opposition outfit – National Super Alliance (NASA), decide to hold joint nominations for the four constituent parties, then they will only work on the modalities.

The NEB boss, who was speaking at Orange House on Friday, March 10, assured party aspirants and members that the ODM nominations will be free and fair with the elections body set to conduct primaries in two counties per day.

The ODM party leader, Raila Odinga, had in February this year, however, assured all aspirants that the party will hold free and fair nominations and that no direct tickets would be issued.

Meanwhile, Jubilee Party has now extended by five days the period for aspirants to submit their nomination documents ahead of party primaries.

Jubilee Party Secretariat head, Raphael Tuju, says this is to give more aspirants chance to join the ruling party and also deal with challenges with one week remaining before submission of members list.

Tuju has also intimated the party headed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto has not signed any formal partnership deal with any other party to back Uhuru’s re-election bid.

The Jubilee Party Secretariat boss has similarly revealed the party is currently cleaning its membership register to weed out names of persons who were listed under unclear circumstances amid uproar.

This comes even as Jubilee Party is toying with the idea of co-opting two affiliate political parties, to act as a fall back for strong aspirants who are apprehensive of nominations, instead of jumping ship to other parties.

The two parties, according to credible sources, will be merge with Jubilee after the August polls.

The fear of fallout as a result of the imminent vicious nominations persists, even after President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto assured aspirants of free, fair and credible nominations.
