ODMs Steve Kariuki Wins Mathare Parliamentary Seat

He garnered 14,966 votes followed closely by TNA's George Wanjohi who got 14,082 in a by election exercise carried out on Monday.

 

Wanjohi is the immediate former MP whose election was nullified by the court.

 

Mathare parliamentary seat fell vacant on May 23, 2014 after the Supreme Court upheld a decision by the Court of Appeal to nullify Wanjohi’s March 4th 2013 election.

 

Kariuki was second in the March 2013 elections.

 

Speaking after being declared winner, Kariuki pledged to work with all for the benefit of Mathare constituents.

 

Other candidates in the Mathare race were Mr Sammy Jentruo Mudanya of Progressive Party of Kenya, Billian Okoth Ojiwa of the National Labour Party, Crispus Fwamba Nyangangali  of Maendeleo Democratic Party and independent candidates William Omondi, Ms Mariam Muthoni Macharia), Barack Obat Blasto and Nixon Kavai Inziria.

 

A total of 29,733 votes were cast during the by election.

 

29,429 were declared valid, 220 rejected while 84 were spoilt.

 

The constituency has a total of 88,053 registered voters.
