Officer in court for stealing firearm

A police constable attached to the Dog Unit Section at Itabua police station, Embu County has been arraigned in court for allegedly breaking into the house of his senior and stealing his firearm.

Constable David Kipyegon Rotich is alleged to have broken into the house of Sergeant Mwangi Mugutu – attached to the Regional Dog Unit – and stole a Ceska pistol valued at Ksh 180,000 and 15 rounds of 9mm caliber ammunition worth Ksh 750, that were property of Kenya Police Service.

Sergeant Mugutu is said to have left the firearm at his house but when he came back he found the house broken into and the gun missing.

Mugutu reported the matter to Itabua OCS who immediately constituted a team to search for the gun in all the houses at the police line, except that of Rotich who was said to have gone to Embu town and was to return later.

They later tried to contact the constable but his phone was switched off. The OCS quickly mobilized police officers who traced the mobile phone to Kaimbogo Village in Ngarua, Laikipia County.

When arrested, Rotich led the Police officers to a house in Manyatta area that allegedly belonged to his girlfriend, Annet Vaati Musembu who then handed over the ceska pistol to the officers.

He, however, denied the offence before Chief Magistrate Maxwell Gicheru and was locked up at Embu police station after the prosecution applied for the officer not to be released in order to complete their investigation

The case will be heard on August 8th, 2015.
