Ogiek Community Benefit with Schools.

The schools were built by Peace and Rights Programme under the Free Pentecostal fellowship.

Peace and Rights Programme coordinator Mr Festus Mukoya said that when they began, there was no single school.

The nearest primary school was more than 20 kilometers away.

The Ogiek children were not going to school until after they established the schools.

Mr Mikoya added that the schools have seen more than 1000 children from the communities who have enrolled.

Each of the five schools has an enrolment of over 300 pupils and only two teachers employed by the government.

He urged the government to deploy teachers to the schools established in the region to ensure the Ogiek children access education.

The schools despite being registered by the government receive no funding from the Ministry of education.

Teachers at the school complained that the area is not gazzetted as a hardship area making it hard for teachers to opt to be deployed there.

He challenged the government to construct the road from Kapsokwony to Chepkitale where the Ogieks live in order to open up the area.
