Oginga Odinga University launches e-Learning programme

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology has launched an e-Learning platform to enhance accessibility and equity in the delivery of its academic programs.

According to the University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Agong’, the platform is intended to increase the number of students undertaking courses at the institution.

He stated that the platform will not only expand equity for Kenyans who wish to access university education at the institution but also reach out to the wider East African region.

Prof. Agong’, who was speaking during the launch of the programme, said that the adoption of e-Learning by the university will improve quality of education offered at the institution since a single lecturer will be able to deliver and monitor course content across its eight campuses.

He disclosed that the university has invested an initial Ksh 5 million over the last three years to establish structures and hire staff who are specialized in graphic design, resource production and technicians who will work hand in hand with the lectures to ensure success of the platform.

He, however, stated that the e-Learning platform is 30% cheaper than the conventional lecture system and that the university expects to rip benefits from its economies of scale over a short duration.

Agong’ also disclosed that the students who do not have computers will be able to use their internet enabled phones to access the platform and download learning materials while learning will become more interactive with instant communication between the lecturers and the students.

He said, however, that the platform will first be piloted in five faculties including the school of Education, Agriculture Informatics, Business studies as well as Humanities and Social sciences beginning June this year before it can be rolled out to other facilities.

Agong’ added that the E-learning platform will be implemented across the Certificate, Diploma, Degree, postgraduate and masters levels to improve access to the universities programmes that are on high demand.
