Ole Lenku: Motors Vehicles To Get New Number Plates

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku said that the fourth generation number plates will have enhanced security features and will incorporate data on the vehicle’s owner as well as other crucial details.

‘‘The number plates will help us curb offences on Kenyan roads as they will relay information on the owner of the vehicle thus giving us the capability of remitting information to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)," Ole Lenku said.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary says the new registration plates and technology will help reduce car theft and aid law enforcers keep track of traffic offences and offenders. Ole Lenku said the new system will also address the problem of vehicle insurance fraud.

Speaking at the Kamiti Maximum Prison while launching the new number plates, ole Lenku said the new system will only be introduced after proper and relevant legislation is put in place.

The project is part of a plan to modernise the management of the motor vehicle sector through the recently introduced Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS).

TIMS had earlier sought to interlink all agencies dealing with motor vehicles such as the police, insurance companies and the KRA through a common portal that will make it easier for all relevant authorities to share information.
