One dead, 7 injured after private vehicle collides with matatu in Homa Bay

One person died and seven others sustained injuries when a private vehicle rammed into a matatu in Rongo town on Tuesday evening.

Confirming the incident, Rongo sub-county Police Commander Peter Kirui said the matatu was moving from Homa Bay towards Rongo while the private vehicle — a Rav4 — was heading in the opposite direction when they were involved in a head-on collision.

According to Mr. Kirui, the driver of the Rav4 vehicle was trying to avoid hitting a bodaboda rider who had just dropped a pillion passenger when he lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the matatu.

The police boss said the deceased, who was alone in the Rav4, died on the spot while seven passengers who were traveling in the PSV sustained injuries and were taken to Rongo sub-county hospital for treatment.

The body of the deceased was moved to Rosewood Hospital mortuary.

Mr. Kirui further appealed to bodaboda riders to adhere to traffic rules, saying most road accidents reported in the region are caused by reckless riders.
