One dead, 7 injured after traders clash in Narok following market demolitions

One person was killed and seven others, among them a police officer, injured after Uhuru and Muthurwa market traders clashed in Narok town.

The clash, which left twelve other suspects arrested, was as a result of demonstrations at Uhuru market over the alleged destruction of kiosks by the Narok County government.

According to traders who spoke to Citizen Digital, the demolitions were carried out on Sunday between 2am and 4am, leaving them counting huge losses.

Tension became rife in the area as Uhuru market traders chased away traders operating from other markets such as Muthurwa, ODM and Kandas.

The enraged Uhuru market traders then, in retaliation, set ablaze Muthurwa Market in Majengo estate, prompting police officers on scene to intervene and fire in the air to disperse them.

Deputy County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi who addressed the protesting locals promised to resolve the issue through legal means.

The arrested suspects were taken to Narok Police Station and are set to be arraigned in court.
