One dead, another injured in bandit attack

One person was Wednesday morning shot dead and another seriously injured after they were attacked by armed bandits at Kawap area in Samburu North Sub County.

The two were heading to Kawap from Baragoi on a boda boda when they were ambushed by a gang of four who were armed with guns.

Speaking on phone, area police coordinating commander Stephen Mwinzi said that police officers are already on the ground and have launched investigations into the incident.

He said the boda boda rider escaped with a gun wound on his right thigh while his passenger died on the spot after he was shot in the head.

The injured man was taken to the Samburu County Referral Hospital for treatment while the deceased was taken to the Baragoi Sub County Hospital.

Speaking in his hospital bed, Nkuokini Letipila said the gang sprayed them with bullets before escaping.

“The helmet I was wearing saved my life. Several bullets were hitting it as I sped off to escape the attackers,” he said.

Ndoto ward MCA Raisy Letora has called on the national government to beef up security in Baragoi, especially during this dry season when residents are moving across boarders in search of water and pasture.

He said that they expect to receive armoured vehicles to fight bandits and cattle rustlers.

“Armored vehicles that were brought to Baragoi vanished and we don’t know where they went to, we expect to receive others from the president,” he said.
