One dead as bandits attack funeral convoy in Baringo

Tension is high in the Turkana East- Pokot border after one person was shot dead on Sunday evening in a convoy that was heading to oversee the planning of a mass funeral for the victims of the December 9, 2017, accident in Loruk, Baringo County.

On Monday morning, vehicles carrying the 22 bodies of the people who perished in the accident had to seek military and police reinforcement in Marigat town to escort the mourners to Kapedo where the deceased will be buried in a mass grave.

Security sources indicate that suspected Pokot bandits staged the Sunday night attack and they intend to lay ambush around the Kapedo bridge.

Twenty-three people died and several others were injured in the Loruk accident that occurred after an Administration Police (AP) lorry lost control and veered off the road.

After the accident, Baringo AP Commandant Robinson Ndiwa said on board the lorry were five police officers and an unknown number of civilians, who had asked for a lift in the police vehicle which was heading to Kapedo from Marigat.

The police officers stationed at Kapedo had gone to Marigat Town to buy foodstuffs.
