One dead, over 20 students seriously injured in Strathmore terror drill

One person died and over 20 students injured, at least three of them critically, after a mock terror exercise conducted at the Strathmore University Monday afternoon turned tragic.

The death and injuries were a result of a stampede that followed the drill as students and members of staff scampered to safety.

Others jumped from high buildings trying to escape what they thought was a real terror attack.

The students were reportedly caught off guard when men dressed in Arab scarfs showed up and started shooting what was later revealed to be rubber bullets.

Reports indicate that some students jumped from the fourth floor of their classrooms while others took to the nearest river in search of an escape route.

The drill was coordinated by administration police officers without the knowledge of police officers at the Lang’ata police station, who were informed immediately it got underway.

The university’s administration has said the drill was conducted to test the preparedness of both the students and staff in case of an emergency.

However, the university has promised to cater for the medical expenses of the injured students.

Following the terror attack at Garrissa University, it was discovered that there was need to review the security situation in all institutions of higher learning.

The government had directed universities and other institutions of higher learning to develop programs to train students on how to respond during terror situations.

During the launch of the programme, former Education Cabinet Secretary Professor Jacob Kaimenyi said: “Without a secure environment no meaningful teaching and learning can go on.”

Students in campuses across the country have been on high alert since April this year after terrorists attacked Garissa University College and killed 147 students.
