One dies after gold mine collapses in Bondo

A 26-year-old gold miner has been confirmed dead after the walls of a mining shaft collapsed in Yamo Oloko village in Bondo sub-county.

According to area assistant chief Michael Amolo Osare, the deceased entered to take shelter in one of the mining shafts when it started raining before the walls of the mine collapsed, killing him on the spot.

Osare further added that Ochieng’s colleagues left the area without noticing that he had been covered in the mining shaft.

The chief said that it was only until Saturday morning that his body was discovered in the shaft when his wife went to inquire from his colleagues of his whereabouts after he had failed to return home the previous night.

The administrator, who confirmed the ill-fated incident, stated that the body has since been transferred to Bondo sub-county Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

All mining activities in the region have since been suspended until the rains subside to prevent further loss of lives.
